Vehicle fleet
In Ecuador, all vehicles must undergo annual registration, providing key data for assessing the country's active fleet. Between 2010 and 2019, the vehicle fleet experienced an average annual growth rate of 7.10%, significantly outpacing the population growth rate of 1.57% during the same period. Over the past decade, an average of 111,052 new vehicles were sold per year, with figures ranging from 63,000 to 132,000 units.
The market includes vehicles from 26 different countries, with China emerging as the leading supplier in 2019, holding 21% of the market share, a significant rise from 5.2% in 2016. Other key suppliers include Colombia (15%), South Korea (12%), Mexico (9%), and the European Union (6%). Locally manufactured vehicles account for 19% of total sales. It is important to note that Ecuador strictly prohibits the import of used vehicles of any kind.
Fleet Age and Longevity
As of 2020, the average age of vehicles in Ecuador is 15.8 years, according to the National Association of Car Dealers (AEADE). The fleet is predominantly composed of older vehicles, with 55% being over 10 years old and 28% exceeding 20 years in age. This aging fleet highlights the need for modernization efforts and policies that encourage the adoption of cleaner, more efficient mobility solutions.
