PILOT IMPLEMENTATION – Moving towards electric last-mile logistics

Productive meetings have been held with logistics companies like Grupo Entregas and other members of ASEMEC, including Laar Courier, Servientrega, DHL, and Urbano Express, to understand their operational needs.

For the pilot phase, which focuses on the gradual adoption of electric vehicles for last-mile logistics, two key preparatory meetings took place with the Mobility Secretary of the Metropolitan District of Quito. They confirmed their support within the project, particularly in the implementation of the pilot at the Historic Center of Quito.

In a joint effort between the private sector, the academia and the international cooperation, from July 25th to August 2nd, the Urban Electric Mobility Initiative (UEMI), the National Polytechnic School (EPN) and the Ecuadorian Association of Express Messaging and Courier Companies (ASEMEC) have developed on-site visits to learn about the daily operations of the companies and all the processes involved in the delivery of a package or light parcel. With this information, UEMI will co-design the first phase of the E-MOVILIZA pilot which will test 4 light e-quadricycles and a cross-docking platform at the Historic Center of Quito.

Three companies have been visited: LAAR COURIER, Urbano Express and Servientrega. The visits have been very insightful to size the cargo volume, the number of people that work in the operations, the schedules for deliveries, the different services that each company offers, the availability of electric fleet, gender and space considerations, among others. Additionally, the information gathered on site will be complemented with a survey about the logistics operations. The goal is to design a successful pilot that considers the companies' necessities.
