UEMI is working to close the gap for women in the transport sector. By awarding scholarships to women, the aim is to encourage the inclusion of women as professional drivers of buses and light electric vehicles.
As part of our commitment to gender equality, the Urban Electric Mobility Initiative (UEMI) has awarded 17 scholarships to women aspiring to become professional drivers of buses and logistics vehicles. This initiative, supported by Quito's Public Metropolitan Company for Passengers Transport and the Courier School from Grupo Entregas, is a critical step towards closing the gender gap in the transportation sector.
To build capacity and make available key information to accelerate a just transition towards low-carbon electric mobility, we are gathering gender sensitive data and developing an electric mobility baseline data that can help identify the roles of women and groups in vulnerable situation in the transport sector.
The first training workshop took place this Sunday, August 18, where 14 women from recycling and courier delivery associations participated. The training contemplates theoretical and practical classes, with a total of 6 sessions, for women drivers of electric cargo bicycles in collaboration with the Fundación Red Sostenible and the Carishina en bici collective.
